And we stabilized ToF a lot by inserting a 5 ms β€˜emitter-off frame’ every 10 frames, then subtracting that map from the next on-frame so ambient and glossy glints don’t bleed into the phase fit; fixed integration and laser current were key. On a 30 fps pipeline it cost about 3% duty and smoothed the odd stability blips we initially blamed on Speckle + room lighting. Caveat: if you’re tight on power or throughput, run the off-frame every 20–30 frames and low‑pass the correction.

On a warehouse robot ToF module, we cut β€˜speckle’ by slipping a tiny vibrating diffuser in front of the VCSEL and driving it about 200 Hz, so a 10 ms exposure averaged multiple realizations and smoothed depth jitter on glossy parts. It was a ~$20 add-on but cost a few dB of optical power, so we nudged exposure up 1–2 ms to keep SNR.

We kept ToF range stable in a hot warehouse by reading an NTC next to the VCSEL and applying a per-temperature phase-offset LUT; it held error under about 3 mm from 10–45Β°C β€” caveat: you need a short calibration bake to build the table. @sjones67.

Early in my first job, a ToF door sensor kept showing a static β€œsnow” pattern because the flat cover glass was acting like an etalon; swapping to a 1–2Β° wedged IR window and adding matte flocking inside the shroud cleared it up without touching firmware… Caveat: you’ll pay a bit more and need tighter alignment on the window.

Quick tip from my first rollout: our ToF offset wandered only when Wi‑Fi chirped β€” the β€˜ghost in the machine’ was the radio, and the VCSEL driver’s supply dipped about 80 mV; a pi filter, beefier local cap, and a 1 kΞ©/100 nF on enable killed the β€˜phase jitter’. Optics fixes are great, but double-check power integrity and EMI coupling before swapping hardware; a short β€˜dark frame’ recal every few hours helped too.
